stage 1 of parade 27, 32"x32" / by Philip Tarlow

4:05 update: that's it for today. it's been interesting making a 12 inch version of monet's water lilies. it makes me understand monet more.

i'm taking it slow and easy with this one; the variations of gray in the floor are subtle and affect the entire space. eventually, it will become clear that there are 2 levels. when the horizontal railing at the bottom appears, you should feel in looking at the completed painting, that you are falling into the space. the portion below the railing, which is seen behind a pane of glass, should increase that sensation, if effect creating 3 levels of descent for the eye. as a whole, this painting, if successful, should have an ethereal quality, like a watercolor.

2:08 update: latest stage below (detail)

1:21PM update: this morning i stretched one of the 10 canvases i've drawn on over the past 10 days and commenced work on parade 27, which is based upon one of the MOMA photos form above shot in 2008. this is what i'll be working on over the next week, interrupted by a trip to denver & vail for work connected to our educational startup, actionlab360.
