BELOW: these 3 studies of Fayum portraits were painted by me in the British Museum in 1972. I requested permission from the Director to make these studies in oil while seated in front of the actual Fayum portraits. Permission was granted, as long as my studies did not have the exact dimensions of the originals. I arrived at the same time every morning & was greeted warmly by the museum guards, who had come to know me. I was introduced to the Fayum by my friend and mentor at the time, Yannis Tsarouchis and his dear friend, reknowned set designer Lila di Nobili
