continued work on 2021 watercolor 3 starting 2021 watercolor 5 / francis bacon / by Philip Tarlow

5:51 PM: this is francis bacon in his studio in 1974.

2021 watercolor 5 11x15”

2:46 PM: i started work on 2021 watercolor 5. my favorite passage is the rock in the center with the red shadow. i also think the violet shadows are cool. and the dark blue marks signaling wavy water are a somewhat new departure from the concentric marks in previous watercolors, and more akin to huang tingjian’s (1045-1105) assertion that calligraphy should be a spontaneous and self-expressive “picture of the mind…”

1:40 PM: 2021 watercolor 3 needed more work on the right segment of the composition. always tricky to go back into a watercolor and maintain the sprit of the first stage.

BELOW: stage 1 is on the left.

i have about an hour to work before we head up the trail, so i may start a new one right now.
