pompeii / the distressed aesthetic / radical changes....again... / by Philip Tarlow

3:30 PM: it's so dark out, with rumblings of thunder, i can't see a bloody thing, so i'm stoping for the day & mikela & i will sally forth the elephant cloud to get some romaine for dinner. grey 18, which i had thought was resolved, has taken a sharp turn & is becoming a portrait. we'll see what it does tomorrow. i must say, i created a fabulous surface to paint a portrait on! as soon as i'm done here & we come back frmo town, i'll check out the auction happening in athens at vergos where, he says, i'll find a painting of mine up for auction, as well as one by my former mother-in-law, niki karagatsi. i'll post it later.

11:15 AM: un-stretching grey 18 in preparation for the next in the series.

i'm just fishing for today's topic. it's way too early to think, so i'll post a bit later....here's a detail from yesterday's grey 18, which kind of looks like a pompeiiian fresco; we'll see where it goes...there is something here of the distressed look, which you can see in this ABP strap i got recently. it's there in much of graffiti as well. you could say it's an aesthetic; the worn, the creased; the torn; the time-faded.....BELOW: a few more examples from grey 11 side by side with a time worn fresco from pompeii
