5/22/14 history of mangaia, revised again today / by Philip Tarlow

i started working on mangaia may 1st. 22 days later, it's finally resolved. maybe.

at each successive stage, of the 6 you see below, (which progress chronologically from left to right,) i thought the painting was resolved. a day or two later, i realized it wasn't.

it's instructive to follow the seven stages by clicking on the second row left to view full screen, then on the right arrow which shows up if you mouse over the image. many beautiful passages had to be sacrificed for the good of the whole, until in stage seven that magical moment occurred when, in turning my glance away and then suddenly returning to the painting, it clicked and my eye was no longer wandering about trying to make sense of the disparate elements, each seductively beautiful independent of the whole.
