2/21/14 3 collages; 2 of them "calligraphy deconstructed" / by Philip Tarlow

kalahari, on the left is so named because there's a snippet on the lower left from a nat-geo world map showing the kalahari desert. it's a place i've always wanted to visit because of the stories i've read about the kalahari bushmen.

the 2 collage on the right are the result of an experiment inspired by ellsworth kelly's work in the early '50's. i created calligraphic marks in the notebook you see on the left, then cut them up into 2" squares, shuffled them like a deck of cards and arranged them on a piece of heavy arches paper.
