new painting begun: huang creek 48x48" / by Philip Tarlow

this is the first day i'm working on huang creek. it's dedicated to chinese 11th c. calligrapher huang tingjian (1045-1105) who believed that calligraphy should be  spontaneous and self-expressive, "a picture of the mind." he, in turn was influenced by and was indebted to the "wild cursive" manner of the "mad monk" huaisu (ca. 735-800).

from "how to read chinese paintings," maxwell k. hearn.
