this morning before meditating i read this in david hinton's hunger mountain:
paleolithic hunter-gatherers were not rendering things in a world outside themselves, as we might at first imagine. they were rendering :
(chinese character for) the primal opening of consciousness where things are neither inside or outside, that sincerity where there is no distinction between me and mountain or hawk. in this sense, the most important aspect of such artwork is the mysterious empty space surrounding the images, for there the opening of consciousness appears.
